This is going to seem like a NON CRUSH, crush post… but i assure you- this makes my heart skip a beat… and wells up creativity from the depths- it takes hard work & serious, serious out of the box thinking… and it all starts with grabbing your camera, and open mind, and taking a walk!!!

Romeo and I went to Austin this weekend to visit our lovely friends Jessica and Grant who were in from Georgia. We met in Germany where Jessica and I soon discovered our mutual love for photography. While Jessica and I talked about photography a lot in Germany we never actually went out and shot (well, except one fun time when we shot each other as couples… but other than that, not at all… sooo sad) Jessica has flown in to second shoot with me and I really love her eye. While in Austin we decided to partake in a photo advent. She met up with some of her lovely friends (Simon and Cindy)(who became our lovely new friends) from Cali who are living in Denton- (seriously, there is a lot of geography involved in this post! it’s over, i promise) We decided to come up with something in the way of a creative challenge on the fly… this is my favorite way to shoot- it was on.

our photo challenge really didn’t span more than a few hundred feet (it was really hot, there were only two cameras involved with 5 people present, and ice cold beverages were calling our names)

CHALLENGE: study texture, line, and negative space* Romeo spiced it up and said, “now, don’t look at the back of your camera.”

oh, you want me to kick it old school and see if i can still nail my exposure? sure, i’m up for it… spot metering… here i come!! it was on, and a blast.

here are some of the images i shot:

so, do you want to be challenged creatively???

here are some fun things you can CRUSH on… and see what happens when you just get out & about!! a few hundred feet is all you need!!

make a couple of lists…ok, make a few instead of a couple- make a list of:

your favorite colors

your favorite textures

your favorite shapes

now add this to your list:

*your favorite time of day

*the perspective you are drawn to (up close, far away, aerial, shooting from underneath)

THESE LIST HELP YOU BEGIN TO THINK VISUALLY… look for these things when you are out & about

now if you really want a challenge and a maybe a little more work-

grab a step stool & some knee pads

*no fancy camera needed!!

here are a couple of assignments that will last you a bit- i would attempt one a week- shot, culled, edited, and enjoyed in print fashion or online! (hello…link to your blog, i want to see)

LINE STUDY : pick a location and focus on the lines created by both organic and man-made objects

TEXTURE STUDY: pick a location and focus on the texture created by both organic and man-made objects

PERSPECTIVE: choose a vantage point other than your height (use a step stool or shoot from your knees) and photograph objects you are drawn to- go back and shoot them a week later from another vantage point and discover how they change

ARCHITECTURE: photograph your neighborhood or town, pay attention to detail and concentrate on using angles that are great for each building, shoot a “classic” shot of each building and using a different perspective try to distort each building

*want to up the pressure?

give your self one roll of film (um… for those that don’t remember 36 snaps)

** want to REALLY up the pressure?

turn your display off, and don’t look at the back of your camera (this challenge is most effective when shooting in manual… duh )

have fun!!! share the love- i want to see what you shoot!!!!

ok photographers, this is another one for you! ** and because this post isn’t going to have any cool logos or images…

here is one from this weekend!! The lovely…Lt. and Mrs. Kelsey Yeagar!

are you spending countless hours editing, proofing, designing albums?

well, this post is for you!!

I have been in business for over 10 years (really?? it has FLOWN by!!) I started my business shooting film (and even after i shot digital i would still shoot film because i didn’t trust the digital results!) I can tell you- shooting film- though it requires perfection is muuuuuch easier on your workflow.

ask Jose Villa. i have to say, after reading that blog post, i almost sold my Mark II’s. But alas, i didn’t. why? why in the world would i keep up the digital workflow? NOT because i don’t LOVE SHOOTING FILM… i do! but because I love the flexibility of digital. LOVE IT.

so, i set out to find the best in the industry to outsource my workflow too… and hear me- there is a cost in outsourcing.

but you have to ask yourself what your time is worth?

how much is “saving .22 cents and image” costing you in the long run?

I’m going to go from start to finish- booking to album delivery.

so do yourself a favor- do more research and find the companies that work best for you- I am not going to list every option- just the ones i use and love.

UNDERSTAND: it has taken me years of 30 day trials and research to land on these- and some of these vendor relationships are in the beginning stages, i will follow up later for sure. these are the vendors that i’m crushin’ on… seriously, i might just kiss them if i ever meet them in person! they have come in like knights on white horses when my life was the craziest… and you know, every girl loves to be rescued!!!

OUTSOURCING AND WORKFLOW SOLUTIONS FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

BOOKING AND STUDIO MANAGEMENT: SHOOT Q

we are still in the beginning stages of studio set up- it’s an undertaking- but already so worth it! i love how it seamlessly tracks leads and allows me to input just about any info i need and customize each email… looove it.

ONLINE PORTRAIT AGREEMENTS: FORMSTACK

i use this for model releases, portrait agreements, surveys, and more! it’s an incredible tool and delivers all of the info to my in box without wasting a thread of paper!

IMAGE PROOFING AND ARCHIVING: FOTOFAFA

talk about LIFE SAVERS… the FOTOFAFA team is incredible. Kenny (who, if you sign up… you will surely speak with) is top notch- if awards were given for customer service- He would win the prize daily!! they are great with my images (and i’m a little picky… ok, a lot) and they archive… hollllllaaaa!!! it’s nice to get my hard drive back with disc’s in hand and know that the job is done!

ONLINE VIEWING, PROOFING, AND ORDERING FOR CLIENTS: PICTAGE

you would think i would have signed up with pictage at their birth as a company- but i was so old school!! i didn’t trust anyone with printing! boy have i learned to put my faith in these guys!! the first couple of orders i had sent to me to make sure (old habits die hard) and i was blow away. Now, my clients only order proofs online (at a discounted price) 8×10 and smaller- they schedule in studio ordering sessions (or over the phone) so, i take my proofed jpegs from FOTOFAFA and upload them to PICTAGE- send out notifications that their galleries are live and PICTAGE does the rest! when my clients order, i get an email, PICTAGE prints, packages, and ships directly to my client- MUUUUCH faster for my client and muuuuuch easier for me!

ALBUM DESIGN: PICTAGE & i use and love BEN HARRISON’S ALBUM TEMPLATES FOR IN DESIGN

i have to say, there are times when i just do it myself, but for the most part that is few and far between… why re-invent the wheel? why not support other photographers who have worked to make my life a little easier? i’m all about that! BEN HARRISON’S ALBUM TEMPLATES FOR IN DESIGN come in lots and lots of really cool creative styles- he even features designs from other photographers (that’s called sharing the love… and it’s so nice when people do that!) PICTAGE actually offers free album designs as a part of your paid membership- you create a folder with your images, select a style, wait 48hours and viola!! then press order… seriously, could it be easier?

LARGE FILE DELIVERY ONLINE: YOU SEND IT

this comes in handy when i am sending high res files. i use it often and love it. they offer a free version or a $10 a month version- can’t beat it. it’s definitely worth a place on your dock!

SHARING IMAGES WITH VENDORS: TWO BRIGHT LIGHTS

oh, my dear goodness me! these girls are GENIUSES!! this is usually how it goes at weddings… I meet the floral designer, cake designer, coordinator, venue officials, dj, band, assistants to all of the above… and they all say “I would love to have some of the pictures that you take today! Will you send them to me?” I reply “sure! absolutely I would love to.” I see the look on their face as they’ve heard that one before and even with the greatest of intentions… i sometimes forget. boo.

enter two bright lights: this again is a very new outsourced part of my workflow and i’m ecstatic!! now i don’t have to fuss with 42 different addresses, discs, and things to mail!

Now I reply- “I would love to share images with you, find me at TWOBRIGHTLIGHTS.COM and when this wedidng posts you can grab any image you want and share it with your clients!” (i just got to say that Sunday night and am so excited to see how many vendors sign up!)

ALL FINAL EDITING AND {art}PRINT MODIFICATIONS: PHOTOSHOP CS4 using my own custom actions along with KEVIN KUBOTA’S & RED LEAF

You’ve heard this again and again if you read photographer’s blogs… ACTIONS ARE NOT IMPERATIVE. they are to simplify your workflow- you shouldn’t rely on them to correct your poorly exposed images- they are incredible tools that should enhance your already great image, and help you speed things up!! I use them daily to tweak little things that i would do if my darkroom were still in the next room. I love them- and can’t tell you how nice it is to be able to press one button and see an image improved!

DELIVERY: You will find lots of print and album packing information here!

I know that everyone’s workflow is a bit different, i am always fascinated to see how other Photographer’s manage their time and work. I would love to hear your solutions, favorite vendors, and other time saving secrets! share away!!

The NUMERO UNO question that i receive from individuals who are interested in the CRASHcourses I teach or just want to start exploring photography…

Which camera do you suggest I buy?

Well- I have to say first that I shoot Canon- I always have. I am not NOT a Nikon fan- students in every single one of my classes shoot Nikon- and i have a lot photographer friends that swear they are the greatest… so… with that said, if i find a Nikon post like this, I’ll share it… but here at Shauna Maness Photography we should canon… and loooove it.

things to consider when preparing to shop for a camera:

what you will be shooting (family, weddings, fast moving kids, architecture, sports, food, flowers, concerts, whatever floats your boat)

what is the purpose of the images you are shooting (personal archiving, professional, just for fun)

what type of shooter are you? (do you know that you will keep it simple & shoot with one lens? (i think that would be sooo sad) do you know that you aren’t going to carry around a big gear bag with tons of gadgets? or do you want every bell and whistle you can find?)

how much do you want to invest (your initial investment can limit you down the road, so keep in mind you don’t have to do everything NOW, so do what you can excellently)

10 things to consider when shopping for a camera:

full frame vs. crop (you have to remember you won’t get the full effect of your lenses with a cropped sensor… so wide angles won’t be as wide and longer lenses will be longer)

lenses out-last your camera body (not that your camera body won’t last a long time… but as technology advances your hotshot-blow-you-away camera might seem like a dinosaur in a couple of years) so buy the best you can afford- if you stay with the same maker they will work for any body upgrade to!

there are three levels of bodies and lenses (that canon manufactures)- you will see clearly the difference in the three when it comes to price- what you can’t see by the price is how they feel in your hands and the results they produce. to see actual galleries of specific lenses and compare head over to dpreview.com they review every camera and lens that you could google- give side by side comparisons and have forums with featured images and specs that you can compare. LOVE THAT SITE.

other lens makers offer premium products that will fit your canon body- be sure you compare those- you may prefer (for example) sigma’s lens flare over canon’s ( i shoot with a sigma macro lens instead of canon because i like the image ratio better)

the faster the better when it comes to lenses the larger the aperture (smaller in number) the lens has, the better… so, when you are shopping you will find that PRIME lenses (lenses that don’t zoom in and out) have the smallest apertures (so you get to become the zoom in and out)

you don’t have to do it all at once- i suggest quality over quantity every time. save monthly and once a year buy a really nice lens, or fun gadget- it will last you longer than a cheap bag of tricks

be careful when buying used- make sure you know who you are buying from. if you are buying from a professional photographer, make sure you ask if the shutter has been replaced- you don’t want a camera who’s shutter has cycled 145,000 times only to break on your 5,000th shot!

buy a warranty- this might sound silly- but your camera needs to be cleaned and checked out about once a year- it cost a couple hundred dollars to send it off every time. your warranty should include an annual cleaning not to mention repairs that add up quickly!

cover your lens!- be sure you add a polarizing or uv filter to the front of your lens so that IF you drop it, dirt flies in it, or it bangs up against something the filter takes the brunt of the force and not your lens glass… you will be glad you did!!

BAG IT- it’s really important to properly protect your gear once you have it. it’s really easy to throw your camera in your purse (GUILTY) or in your back pack surrounded by “protective” things… but take it from me- your lenses can be damaged with the slightest shift- they are fragile, treat them as such!

THE CAMERA’S I SUGGEST:

*you will notice that i am just suggesting the camera body here without the “kit” lens (the lens that they bundle with the camera as they are selling it) most of the time if you use the difference in the cost you can invest in a much nicer lens.

Lenses I think are great to start with:

I suggest beginning with prime lenses because it allows you to have maximum control- and keeps you from getting lazy relying on your lens to change your perspective instead of actually moving the more you move, the more you see!!!

Canon’s 50mm’s

these are really great low light lenses and incredible for portraits, landscapes, and just about anything else!!

oh, my goodness… i can’t tell you the depths of my love for packaging. it’s so true. i judge books by covers & products by packaging. guilty as charged.

there is something so special about receiving a gift, or purchasing something that is wrapped with care… it makes your investment seem solidified. you know, like your investment has value.

this is an important part of my business- while i don’t always do a great job- most of the time (did i really admit publicly to not ALWAYS doing this? yes, i did… sometimes clients are rushed, orders are rushed, and not every single detail is perfect… but , perfection is the goal)

2011 is going to be a really fun year for Shauna Maness Photography- I will have been back in America for over a year and decided how exactly i want to nail down some really important business details- packaging is one of them.

i’ve been researching like a MAD WOMAN!! i can’t tell you how many times i’ve googled things like Natural Corrugated-out Gift Boxes, Premium Gift Boxes, lay flat paper storage, print boxes, photography storage boxes, presentation folders, trifold folders….

the list goes on, and on, and on, and on… a long the way i’ve had to stop and send emails to photographer friends who’s branding would lend itself perfectly to some of my findings… still, no perfect match for me.

why is packaging so important.?? there are more reasons that could be shared in this small post… so i’ll share one of my favorite articles from Design*Sponge biz ladies: how to design the perfect packaging if you don’t follow the biz ladies series… and you are a biz lady, i would suggest you check out the archives, there is a HOST of information, and while it’s not geared specifically to photography it will help with any business.

i am working like crazy to translate everything i do into every aspect of your experience here at Shauna Maness Photography. it’s really important that you feel a certain way when you receive your order… and i haven’t quite arrived at the solution yet… but i’ve discovered lots and lots of great companies that i want to share with you… so i hope you enjoy the packaging fun i’m crushing on!!

they make my mind race with possibilities!

another great industry packaging company is marathon press- they have custom design options, photographer designed options, and basic color pre-produced options… i love there square box options (they would be great for albums and float wraps!) their website is a bit confusing- you kind of have to hunt for products, but they are great when you find them! here are a few of my favs!

there are a lot of really great websites that have endless assortments of boxes, tissue, cards, envelopes, raffia, and wrapping paper- a few of my favorites are:

ok, this is a TRICKY, STICKY, TOUGH TOPIC. i am going to share my thoughts, and i invite you, from the jump, to share yours as well.

i get questions all the time about discounts- these questions come from photographers (as in, do you give them?) potential clients (as in, can i have them?) and friends and family (as in, how much do i get?)

this is an area that has always been very fragile- not because i mind saying no (i have learned to protect my family and time without apology- the hard way, but none the less, i’ve learned)

this post was inspired by a this great post i read this morning by Melissa Jill- she posted this video & i’m going to start this post with it, so you can really get the picture of how skewed our ideas are about Photographer’s in business.

Melissa Jill shares her policy with friends/family and then states the following:

If clients or others who don’t fit the “super-close friend/family” description ask me if I’m willing to negotiate based on price, my answer is no. If you are a vendor in the wedding industry, I would recommend you do the same. Here are the reasons:

1. I’m not desperate for work. Offering someone a discount admits that you are.

2. It devalues my brand. I’ve worked hard to set myself apart from the pack based on many factors — quality is one and price is another. I am not a photographer who is affordable to everyone. That’s a choice I’ve made and I’ve built my brand around it. If I were available to everyone, my brand would not be seen as a premium.

3. Clients who ask for a discount generally don’t value what I have to offer and will continue to try to negotiate at every turn. I would like to work with clients who value their photography and are willing to pay for premium service and quality. I understand that clients are working with a budget. But budgeting is all about prioritizing. If you truly prioritize one area of your wedding, you are willing to cut corners in other areas.

4. I value my time, experience and expertise. I’ve decided what my value is and if a client doesn’t agree with that value, we’re probably not a good fit.

5. I only want to work around 20 weddings a year. If I give a discount to a client for a specific date I will possibly have to turn away a client who is willing to pay full price for that same date.

6. I just think it’s yucky and isn’t a good practice to perpetuate in the wedding industry. In what other industries is it acceptable to negotiate on price? Not many that I can think of. I don’t think price negotiation and bartering should be acceptable in our industry.

_____________________

i echo each sentiment exactly- and want to add a couple of things-

i am sure that every single photographer reading this blog is thinking- word. finally, i’m not alone! (or crazy!)

i am going to share a couple of examples of conversations that i’ve had since i’ve moved back to Texas (without names of course) and try to explain as a professional what the conversations communicated to me, as the artist working for hire. (please don’t be offended if you think this is “your” conversation- this really isn’t personal to me, i really don’t get mad, or cry myself to sleep- so please don’t do either of those things either- this post is really for photographers as an encouragement to stick to their guns and believe in the brand and business they are building- and to take great care of the clients who choose to invest with them… so, no hard feelings, ok? )

during a wedding consult for a Summer Saturday wedding (these book up really quickly) the collection we created was a few hundred dollars over what the bride budgeted. Her sweet maid of honor told her she would pay the difference or that she would cut corners on the DJ- but that she really didn’t need to cut photography corners- the sweet bride left to think about it- i never heard back from her. the same date was booked without the batting of an eyelash shortly there after. (see Melissa Jill’s #4 &#5)

i received a phone call from a very upset potential bride who i had exchanged emails with. she wanted to know why she wasn’t being offered the same package as her friend. (we had NEVER discussed any kind of collection or “package” EVER… she was calculating on her own with the price guide & there were many differences between the two weddings, the main difference was that hers was not a local wedding) during the course of the conversation i realized i had been roped into discussing things that were absolutely none of her business (and unprofessional for me to discuss with her), i quickly apologized, took responsibility for the turn and redirected the conversation explaining my base coverage and ended the conversation.

several brides have “shopped around for photographers” come back to me with what the other photographers offer and asked me to “match it”- this concept is baffling to me, truly baffling. we are not all the same. we have different levels of experience, expertise, and quality of service. hear me: 9 times out of 10, you get what you pay for. (see Melissa Jill’s #6)

you are not alone.

some people really don’t get it- so, don’t take it personally- really, there is no need to get your feelings hurt when someone doesn’t understand the value of what you do- if they don’t now- they probably never will- no worries, they aren’t your client. the reality is, you won’t have time to run your business properly if you are always selling yourself short. that is how people get burned out and bitter. no one wants that.

when i am approached with questions about discounts, just like melissa, i simply say no. i’m sorry. i won’t do that. fact: it is better for me to work less for what it actually costs for me to run my business, than to work for free and lose money in the end. the only person that pays that cost is me.

what about family? what about close friends?

here is my approach to family and friends (family is my immediate family members only and friends really only includes a few friendships that i’ve had for 10 years + or a lifetime in one case) for those folks- I give them ONE free session a year (because i love them and i really want awesome pictures of them) and ONE session fee at 50% off (they can use it themselves or give it to a friend) my friends and family are my biggest fans- they tell everyone in the world that i am the greatest photographer on the planet (good thing they don’t know where to look for really great photographers) i want to give back to them what they give to me- reciprocity is a beautiful thing. they then receive 50% off of my prints and can order other products at full price- why 50% off? well, because i have an extremely social family and they always have houses full of folks, so i like to deck their walls and give there guests some eye candy and something to think about when they go home to their bare walls!

how should i expect to treat or be treated by friends and family?

one of my really close friends is getting married this summer. she contacted me about photographing her wedding and we began to discuss what she wanted her collection to look like. I only book 20 weddings every year, and i know what my business needs to be profitable. because of the date of her wedding i couldn’t offer her any discounts or special rates because i knew that i would book that date and be closer to my annual goals (i know that sounds really cold, but i promise i don’t mean it that way) she loves me, and loves my work- her response was that she knew i was worth every penny, but she just didn’t have enough in her budget to hire me. it was a wonderful honest exchange between friends with no hurt feelings. she knew what she needed and what she could spend, and i knew what i needed and what i could give. we just couldn’t make it work. i booked the dated quickly there after.

my sister jacklyn is the best at staying on top of current photography, she books her session faithfully and understands that she is treated just like a client and has to wait for her images just the same. i shot her wedding in october and she budgeted for photography like every other bride and hired me to shoot her wedding- she values what i do and wanted the best- i couldn’t ask for a more supportive sister! She receives emails, order, and review sessions, and has to get on the calendar like everyone else. (and she does is most efficiently)

there have been times when friends or family have said something along the lines of “it time for us to have some new pictures taken” or “if you ever need a model, you know you can always shoot so and so.” my response is a smile & ” whenever you are ready to get on the calendar call the studio and we will put you down!” (ball back in their court) i cannot remember it all, i cannot do it all- the reality is- if it is important to you, you will make it happen. so, i don’t worry about the fact that my brother hasn’t done a family shoot in 2 years (hint!)- that is totally up to him!

are there exceptions to giving discounts to clients?

with every rule there are exceptions- that is the beauty of owning your own business. you just have to be extremely careful with those exceptions. if you give them often, they aren’t exceptions, there are a new rule.

there are times when a window of opportunity opens up un-expectantly and i have the option to work or not to work, if there is a project that i have in mind, or a couple i love that i want to bless and i have the opportunity to, i do. i don’t always have that option, but when i do, most of the time i take it. i just don’t put it on blast, and i make sure they understand not to either.

because i am a portrait and wedding photographer- a large portion of my business comes from high school and college seniors- I offer packages to them that i don’t offer to any other clients- the reason being that these clients grow up to be my brides, sweet pregnant mama’s, then babies, and on and on… it is really the beginning of their relationship with my company & i want to make them feel welcome and help them build a collection they can enjoy and treasure until the next phase of their life. i have shot a lot of people senior to baby… it’s pretty cool.

the bottom line comes down to the fact that you are in business.

you are in BUSINESS.

are you a McDonalds? a mom & pop soda shop? a 5 course dining experience?

be who you are, treat people like they deserve to be treated.

stop settling and saying yes, when in your gut you know you should be saying no.

people have NERVE. guts beyond anything i could even imagine- it doesn’t hurt them to ask…. but you control the outcome- you have the final say.

a couple of things that might just help you:

think about every conversation that you’ve had that has left you tongue tied.

think about every reason that you are in business.

script out a reply that is kind, to the point, and professional.

recite it over and over, until you believe it.

then wait for the opportunity to share it… it will come.

always have in the front of your mind the “why behind” what you are saying.

let your yes be yes and your no be no.

you are building a brand and reputation with every decision and conversation- be sure that you are building a sound structure.

release yourself from the unrealistic expectations- you are not everyone’s photographer- make a list of people in the industry you love and respect & share some love with them.

if a potential client isn’t a good fit for you, maybe they will be for your friend- you never know who might start sending people your way!

i hope this is helpful!! shout out to Melissa Jill… what a great conversation starter!

Hello Photographers! I hope this post finds you well- feel free to bring your questions, leave comments & share your successes and failures… we all have room to grow this post is not to serve as an answer all- but small bridge from where you are to where you need to be when it comes to your pricing and sales- it will be filled with links to other photographers who have done a great job discussing this topic & full of tools that will serve to make your road to success a smoother one.

Understand first, that the way that i do business is really, to be honest, polar to a lot of people in our industry. I make it a priority to give, even when it cost me greatly- and to pour into everyone who walks in my door, client or not. this takes a lot of time & quite honestly can really be difficult when it seems like everyone around me is always energized and encouraged when they leave & i’m a mess- i don’t say that to make myself look great- don’t miss the last part- ask my sweet husband, most of the time, i’m a mess. but, my business grows daily and i continue to meet the goals (even the astronomical ones) i’m setting (not by my own merit, but the grace of God!!)- so, know that what i tell you will come from this place- give, and when you don’t feel like you can anymore, give more.

part of the giving is (attempting) to answer questions i get daily from other photographers, most of the time i do this by email with the intentions of blogging the questions, but i’m not so great at that… so, to the coffee shop i came today- to write without distraction- and tada!! question number one!

this question comes from a Washington Photographer :

I was just wondering if you have any tips on boosting print sales.
Clients love the photos in their gallery, but only end up buying two prints. All of my
business is still in my hometown, so it’s hard for me to meet with clients to go over photos,
but I do make that an option for them. I’m just trying to make 2010 a more successful year,
so I was wondering what you do to get those purchases up?

Ok** warning, this might be information overload**

First of all, i think you need to know that there are a TON of people where you are- I am going to break down your question into parts, so that it is answered thoroughly!
I was just wondering if you have any tips on boosting print sales.

THE FIRST STEP TO GREAT PRINT SALES IS GREAT PRICING

!! i don’t mean finding another photographer who puts their pricing online and copying theirs because it looks about right !!

there is a lot to consider when setting your prices- it takes thought, honesty, goals, growth, and a calculation of all of those things to come up with what works for you- you have no idea what the next guys investment is, so don’t base your sales on his! check out this AWESOME pricing guide by Stacy Reeves download it, read it, re-read it, and then start calculating your prices.

YOUR PRICES ARE YOUR FOUNDATION.

once they are set with your complete understanding of why your 8×10 has to cost $40 or $140 and you can look your client in the eye without batting and add it to their invoice- your sales will increase- because you will be confident in your communication and your clients understanding of the value of their investment will increase- see how this will work?

Clients love the photos in their gallery, but only end up buying two prints.

there are a couple of things that i would suggest for selling online-

i ran by business for 4 years online- i lived in Germany and while i had a lot of clients in Germany, the majority of my business came from my annual trips back to the US and my clients were all over America- needless to say, my online capabilities had to be top notch or it would effect my sales greatly- it took me a while to come up with a system, but when i did- it worked pretty smoothly.

first thing:

MAKE SURE YOUR ONLINE STORE IS EASY TO NAVIGATE

SEND YOUR CLIENTS DIRECT LINKS TO THEIR GALLERY AND PRODUCTS SO THEY DON’T HAVE TO LOOK FOR THEM *because they won’t*

SHOW SAMPLE IMAGES OF YOUR PRODUCTS -if you don’t have image samples of your products- create them! you will see the return immediately! people won’t buy what they can’t see

CREATE A SALES/PRODUCT GUIDE that you can email in .pdf form or have hidden on your site for them to view (here is an example of a PRODUCT GUIDE if you aren’t a designer, don’t try to become one here! invest in someone who has the skills and will make you look GOOD!!)

SHARE PRODUCT IDEAS THAT FIT THEIR HOME & LIFESTYLE

here are some samples of what i use:

there are a lot of shopping cart options-it is important to do your research and see what works best for you!

i did a lot of research and ended up going with PicturesPro.com i love their customizing options and Tim is great with emails and customer service! (and they have a great forum that you can search if you don’t want to bother him) it is a one time investment with no monthly fees & all credit cards are processed through paypal and linked back to your site. It’s pretty seamless. Occasionally i will have a client with a problem but it is rarely anything that i can’t walk them through.

product sample images- i have these for every product i offer my clients

here is an example of a gallery that i would suggest to my client: (this is a screen shot)

the online store that i use allows for really great customization and takes out a lot of the guess work, my client has the freedom to arrange the images as he/she chooses and in the end is left with a gallery that is exactly what he/she wants!

it’s important to know your client- i always ask about their home, how they want to LIVE with their collection – client communication is KEY.

All of my business is still in my hometown, so it’s hard for me to meet with clients to go over photos, but I do make that an option for them.

this is the most recent change in my business- shifting from overseas and online to in person has been A BIG CHANGE. when my phone started ringing with questions i was a little taken back (because no one called in Germany) i would always ask for their email and try to move back to my online strategy- but i realized quickly- for me to develop the relationship and trust that i really wanted to with my clients, i needed to TALK to them- to sit with them, and to help them protect their investment.

When i sit down with my clients i make it very clear that they have a lot of options, but i don’t show them a single one until i feel like i have a good grasp on what they need. I am not interested in selling to sell. I’m not selling used cars, i don’t have an inventory to get rid of- so, i don’t approach it that way. what i do have is a beautiful collection that deserves to be displayed and enjoyed for generations- and so that is where i begin.

we talk about their home, where they live the most in it, where they host guests, or hang out-

the colors, textures, layout… if they move around a lot (military families) sometimes books & albums are better choices-

every collection is determined by the client. i have no idea what they will order when they arrive. and i don’t have a product in mind- and try to sell from that place- i don’t want to sell myself short or limit my client in any way.

i have recently changed my online gallery options because i have a studio and the ability to host my clients there-

i now host all of my proofs through pictage and let pictage handle all of the “gift print” orders- 8×10 and smaller. they print and ship them directly to my client- my clients can view their gallery and share with family and friends online.

they then schedule an ordering appointment with me and enjoy seeing all of their options in person (i have samples of every product for them to see and touch) i offer a discount for them as a courtesy at their ordering session and any order that they place after that day is full price.

My product orders are always, ALWAYS significantly higher when my clients come in- it isn’t because i get all slimy and start trying to sell them everything under the sun- it’s just because they can see the difference in the quality and they want to protect their investment- and they see first hand that i care about their investment too- and i will do everything i can to ensure their money is invested wisely.

so, i would take the option out- MEET WITH YOUR CLIENTS IN PERSON! *if the drive for them is far, you might offer them a gift print as a thank you for their travel

HAVE PRODUCT SAMPLES WITH YOU!

LISTEN TO YOUR CLIENTS AND BE SMART WITH THE PRODUCTS YOU SHOW/OFFER!

and up your sales will go!

I’m just trying to make 2010 a more successful year, so I was wondering what you do to get those purchases up?

aren’t we all!!

REMEMBER TO SET GOALS. even if they seam crazy- if you know that you want to average $1500 per session but right now you are $300 – keep your head up! right that goal down- work hard at creating a collection that they have to have… that really captures them as they are-

i can’t stress enough how important it is to COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR CLIENTS.

if we all decide that we will put our CLIENTS first- then the way people view our industry in every town will change. if you are cranking away and your clients don’t feel the difference in you and the next guy- there is something wrong!

get to know your clients, what they love, what they value…

when you have those things in mind, whatever you present to them as a wise investment will be received gladly. (not always sold, but at least not met with folded arms!)

TAKE THE TIME TO WORK ON YOUR PRICING, MEET WITH & LISTEN TO YOUR CLIENTS, PRESENT PRODUCTS THAT ARE A FIT FOR THEM, AND YOU WILL INCREASE YOUR SALES!!

best of luck!!!

as i am sure every photographer does, i search & search for the perfect camera bag. CONSTANTLY.

it seems like everyday i need one more slot, or another zipper pouch, or a longer strap, or shorter strap, or more protection, or a zip closure… the list goes on & on.

i just ordered some new gear and was making sure that when i got ready for my wedding last weekend i would be able to carry it comfortably, keep it safe, and get to it easily. there are a couple of really great bags out right now, created by photographers that often share the same problems we all do… there solutions are great, but just not quite right for me (maybe they will be next week)-

the two bags i speak of specifically are the shootsac & the kelly moore bag - these bags are GREAT, FUN, & BEAUTIFUL, but like i said… they aren’t QUIIITE right for me- i’m afraid i would break my lenses using the shootsac (because i’m clumsy) its made of wetsuit material and really molds to your body (which i think is awesome) – the Kelly Moore bag is a new bag and too adorable, but too big for me- but man- it’s beautiful!

sooo, if those bags are perfect for you- AWESOME!! or, if you are looking for a perfect bag and don’t want to mess with making it yourself, order them & tell them i sent you their way!

if they aren’t quite perfect and you want a little bit of flexibility- here is what you need to do:

1. head to the mall, tj maxx, marshalls, or ross & pick out a great bag (or 3)

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A BAG:

look for a bag that has a shoulder strap (or the option to add one)

look for a bag that closes

look for a bag that is tall enough for your longest lens

look for a bag that is wide enough for your lenses

look for great quality leather or sturdy material- you want it to last!

2. order the think tank airport kit

3. order the think tank strap (why the think tank strap) because it’s cushioned and curved, adjustable, and sturdy!! that’s why and your lenses and gear get heavy- so you want a great strap to protect you from the weight!

4. decide how you want your bag to be arranged (how many compartments you will need) put them together like a puzzle. use the long parts for the sides and bottom and then add the small ones for compartments.

5. don’t forget to add cushion to the bottom of your bag

6. adjust your strap

7. add your lenses and gear shoot away!!

that’s really it- custom bags are simple!! you just need to use the kit like a puzzle and make sure the pieces all fit securely!

no one will even know you have a camera in your bag!! i used the multi-color suede one last weekend and on two sessions this week and LOVE it!! i can even add my camera body on top of my lenses- with a divider in the middle to protect from scratching (and at the wedding i had my 70-200 there!)

BONUS: when you don’t want to use it as a camera bag any more you have a really cool purse!!

IF YOU ARE HEADING OVER TO THINK TANK… BE SURE YOU USE THIS CODE: AP-408 (you get a free gift with your purchase of $50 or more, and i think it might be a free bag… SCORE!!)

just in case you would like to know my other favorite bags:

when i travel or head to weddings or projects with a ton of gear, i use this bad boy: Airport Security V 2.0 and YES. i did/do fly internationally with it. (we lived in europe for 4 years and i flew back to the US 2-3 times a year) i just smiled really big, and rolled really quickly past the security guys and stuffed it up top really fast in the plane- never had a problem.

when i’m out and about with a couple of lenses is use the URBAN DISGUISE 30 and most of the time during weddings my assistant or second shooter wears this with the 70-200 in it- because it is tall enough for it- it keeps my lenses all snugly and likes that

hope you enjoy

if you are a wedding photographer and have done a lot of weddings, you probably have a routine- a way to make every wedding run smoothly- and make sure you have everything you need, when you need it.

when you are just starting, it is OVERWHELMING and really stressful to try to think of EVERYTHING.

so, i thought i would share my routine with those of you who might not have one- i hope it helps sort out the madness!! i’m not claiming this is everything, it is just most things

BEFORE THE NIGHT BEFORE:

make sure you have the names and cell phone numbers of someone who will answer the phone that can relay a message to the bride or groom (most of the time they don’t use their phones the day of… be prepared to talk to a stressed out bridesmaid… she will be the hero of the day- love her!) if you have your brides number that should be fine, someone will answer her phone

gather the address of every location you will be shooting- ceremony, reception, (in the case of my wedding tomorrow- we are doing the formals in a park, so- be sure you know where you are going)

request a shot list from your bride, if she says “she trusts your judgment, make sure she writes it in an email just to protect yourself in case great aunt jackie gets her feelings hurt and blames it on you (and to protect your bride, sometimes just writing down, “i trust your creative expertise” can really be a powerful thing!

make sure that you know what time you will be shooting so that you can discuss the lighting and photography needs in detail with your bride- if she is having an evening wedding, opts out of the first look, and wants portraits flash free after the ceremony- she’s in trouble- so save her the heart ache

THE NIGHT BEFORE (this may seem a little silly to those of you who do this often, but keep in mind, this is for those that don’t… share your seasoned tips with us in the comments, we are all learning here)

***i have to write a disclaimer and say brandon is my witness i still get very nervous as a wedding approaches- it is such an honor for me to be a part of this incredible day in the lives of my clients that i want everything to be PERFECT. so, my hands get sweaty, my stomach knots up, and i pray, a l o t. it is perfectly normal to get nervous- i think i might be more nervous if i wasn’t nervous. i use every wedding as an opportunity for growth- as i grow as a photographer, more knowledge leads to more responsibility- and a greater pursuit of excellence- so i also go into almost every wedding with a personal goal- a specific thing that i want to try, or an area i want to really push myself to improve in, it gives me a tangible goal to aspire to- and it extremely motivating! ok, back to the night before:

CHECK YOUR TIMELINE- make sure that you know exactly when you need to be where- and then check it again. DON’T BE LATE. COME ON!! YOU ARE THE PHOTOGRAPHER!!!

DOUBLE CHECK YOUR TIMELINE (ok, enough of that)

set a call time for your assistant, second shooter, team, who ever you roll with, make sure they are there EARLY.

GET OUT YOUR GEAR LIST (if you don’t have a gear check list, make one and keep it blank so that you can print it out and check things off as you pack them (make two columns so you can check twice) – THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF ONE OF MY OFFICE FORMS

PRINT out your shot list from your bride and review it- make a mental note and pay attention to questions that you might ask & make sure the proper time is allowed- big group shots can take 5 min each- so make sure you’ve got the time right!

fill up your car with gas so you don’t have to stop

charge your batteries (i normally do this through out the week when i think about it)

clear all of your memory cards and make sure you have plenty of room for the big day

check your flashes & settings to make sure you have a good starting point for the reception- the final tweaks for exposure will happen at the venue (i still check these before because i play around a lot with my gear and i want to make sure i haven’t done something weird that would require me to use a lot of my brain to fix it on the fly)

pick your bag/s for the day

make a list of what gear you will need when for example my list looks something like this: FORMALS 85, 50, 24-70 (sometimes 24) PRECEREMONY 85, 50, 50 macro, 24 CEREMONY 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 85 RECEPTION 16-35, 50, 85, 24 (sometimes 24-70)

load your bag with the gear you will need first (i have a rolling thinktank bag and a bag i made (tutorial coming) so, i keep my lenses i will be using now, with me… the rest are guarded by a pack of angry dogs

check your gear list off

pray for creativity- trust that God hears your prayers and loves your bride and groom more than you do- or their family does- ask Him to equip you to capture them honestly as they are.

flip through some online inspiration or your idea book for great shots you want to attempt- review your goals

grab a hand full of business cards and put them in your bag and the pocket you will be wearing

get good, restful sleep and wake up ready to enjoy the day- you have been given the highest honor- you are going to record history that will be cherished for generations!!

DAY OF WEDDING

write your bride and groom a sweet note thanking them for letting you share in their day

put all of your print outs in one place (directions, shot lists, phone numbers)

take your drivers license, business credit card, cell phone, and a twenty dollar bill and put it with your memory cards (you never know what you are going to need!!) leave your wallet at home

make sure your bag is clearly marked and that every memory card has your name and a contact number on it

do your last gear check (** true story, i did all of the above for a portrait session, set my camera on the table to grab after the battery charged, grabbed the battery, left the body- had all of my lenses, no camera body… did i have a back up- um, left that too… good thing she was my friend AND client!! don’t make that mistake!! CHECK AND RECHECK!)

things you might want to stash in your bag: chap-stick (unopened… you don’t want a crusty lipped groom) small scissors, safety pins, band aids, extra pens, and something to take notes on- you never know when you will need to remember something! bottle of water, small snack, and GUM OR MINTS (everyone will looove you) and your chap-stick or lip gloss… everyone looks better all glossy!

THAT’S IT PACK UP AND GO. don’t forget to enjoy!!

** I AM SURE I LEFT OUT A TON- there is a lot that becomes second nature- i’ll pay close attention in the morning to my routine… and then add what i discover- if you are a photographer and you have something to add, please share!! for those looking for a routine, good luck!!! it will come in time!

and… because i had a super fun session today… i’ll share what made my heart skip a beat for two reasons… first, the moment was special, sooo sweet & funny- but the second is the 50 1.2… it is crazy!! this is at 1.2!!! look at her eyes!!!

I am asked this questions A LOT by photographers, aspiring photographers, hobbyists, and enthusiasts.

WHAT DO YOU USE TO EDIT YOUR IMAGES?

If i’m serious about photography and really want great editing software, what do i need to buy?

without question: Photoshop CS4 (this is the latest version of Photoshop, if you have an earlier version, don’t be offended )

there are a million reasons- i’ll just name a few.

workflow tools like the Adobe Camera Raw plug in save you hours, and HOURS of time

you can install actions and create your own that will speed up your edit time

you can use it as a graphic design platform if you don’t want to dive into illustrator right away

Is CS4 the same as Elements? um. no.

you can do some really, really cool things with elements, but it is not the same as CS4.

I’ve looked for CS4 and it is EXPENSIVE! is there a way to get it cheaper?

here are the online options for buying- i always recommend amazon because they always have the best prices. If you are a student or teacher (or there is one living in your house) you can buy the student version that is A LOT less expensive.

If you are in business, then you understand the value of investing in the best tools. So, don’t shy away from the expense. It will pay for itself with the quickness! (and it’s a tax deduction!)

so, here are the links: student versions first

if you have an earlier version of Photoshop (and you have the serial number) you can upgrade easily and it is less expensive.
If you are interested in getting the whole suite (illustrator for graphic design, indesign for page layout (aka album design)) then here are the links to the whole suite.
be warned: It pays to be a student when purchasing from Adobe. the discount is NUTS!

things are changing around here- and they seem to be changing at light speed.

i thought february was going to be a slow, laid back month that kindly obliged as caught up with all of the things that i needed to catch up on…

it seems mr. february had other plans.

i have had morning after morning of meetings and appointments and can’t seem to catch the wind in my sails.

i did manage to spend some sweet time with my sister and crew at her garage sale- i made $57 headed to the mission to donate the leftovers and spent $30! spent some more sweet time with my sister in law and nephew this weekend, baked some cookies, tried a new recipe, and invented a tasty msg free tortilla soup. (it was taaaaaasty!) and made it to an auction to hang out with my sweet mama & her best friend dawn- so, that was great. i resolved to leave my computers asleep and enjoy my weekend. i’m so glad i did. but when it was over, i looked around and my house was still a wreck- the organizing still wasn’t finished and the more i looked around, the more i wanted to change everything… EVERYTHING!

i have been perusing my idea books & magazines for inspiration a lot lately. i feel like i am seeing the same things, everywhere- i need to expand my horizons!! so- i got out my books (they have YEARS worth of favorites and are always great for a fresh perspective. i have decided on a few things that i knew before looking at them, but am for certain now… i am repainting my dining room. i detest the color. yes, i said detest. it’s true. it is supposed to be the under coat of a really cool color on top- but i don’t know if i will ever find the time to finish it, so i think i might just call a do-over. second: take back the rug that i found… because just like i thought when i was in the store… brandon may like it, but it doesn’t really work for the feel of the house. so- after seeing really great rugs in clippings all weekend, i’m taking back the rug first thing tomorrow (thank goodness for 30 day return policies!!) last thing: i need a work bench in my office- so that it doubles as a studio- because there is a bit of wasted space & it all needs to function together- so, i’m making that happen asta pronto!!

in case you don’t know what idea books are… here is a peak:

for years i’ve taken all of my favorite magazines, browsed the pages and stacked them in a corner. once every couple of months i go through them and tear out the pages of the things that catch my eye. recipes, decor, photo ideas, art, design, stationary, shoppe ideas, fashion, make up, anything- it is all separated into different sections placed in sheet protectors, and then housed in these linen binders i bought on sale at target with no specific use & then viola… the idea pages became books! they are a source of more joy and creatively than any other resource i’ve discovered or created. i enjoy them so much. they were my go to’s when i started trying to make this house a home, but for some reason, they’ve been shelved for months. no mas. this house is gonna change!! this office is gonna change!!

this is a ramble, i know- but it is really intended to serve as a creative tool… because you see, i wouldn’t have made that list if i hadn’t turned my computers off- i would have continued to live in unsettled chaos- YUCK. so, what are you waiting for? do you have magazines all stacked up? are you living in chaos? are you unhappy with the way your work, living, loving, eating, drinking, creating space looks? change it with me!! i tell you what- let’s take before and afters, you send them to me & i’ll post them- we’ll vote on who’s is the best & you can have an art print for your walls!! sounds like a plan!!!
